I just had enough light to see the 75 yards across my little food plot when I caught movement of a large bodied deer. I grabbed my gun which I decided I would use that morning due to events that had taken place earlier in the week. When I got the scope on the deer I realized it was "Thunderneck", me and him go back a few years and he's an old warrior that I had full intentions of shooting this year but he didn't stick around long in the opening and was gone before I could settle the crosshairs …
Adventures
Me, Cowboy, and some Black Forest Ham
Rifle season started slow for us with the full moon and acorns and broke down trucks. No man with a hunting license should ever have to mechanic a vehicle in the month of November, it should be a law, but when you have a 16 year old kid with a big foot and a big truck regardless of what the calendar says you are gonna be working on trucks. I was in a tree somewhere when I get a text that says "I broke my axle on my truck". I'm thinking he don't know the difference in an axle, a drive shaft, or …
Youth Weekend Deer Hunt
This past weekend was the opener for youth 16 and under for rifle deer hunting. One of the great things about it is that it's still archery season for everyone else so we all get to hunt. This is Alex's last youth weekend of his life which didn't mean much to him but to me it did because I remember on this weekend 9 years ago he killed his first deer and has been steadily killing deer ever since. At last count he was near 40 whitetails, about a dozen hogs, a dozen turkeys, a bobcat with a bow, …
The last antelope and other critters
After just one day we had two antelope tagged so we decided we would all go together in the jeep for the last one. Cory was last to shoot as he seems to be most years. I have a theory that he waits for everybody else so he will have a full staff of people at his disposal with nothing to do but help him find antelope, he may be smarter than I think. Most years on this trip we get all the antelope tagged before doing much coyote hunting so off we went like a big happy family in the jeep. It could …
Two down one to go in New Mexico
I promised dead animals and no rainbows in this post so here we go. We had a good idea of where two good bucks were hanging out from our scouting the day before so we started the morning right where we had seen one of them that morning. The weather was cold, windy and rainy so I would be lying if I said I couldn't wait to get out of the jeep for a stalk. I was enjoying my coffee and Tucumcari's greatest hits oldies radio station but knew when we spotted the right buck the hunt would be on. It …
