Man, Dogs, and Hogs: A story as old as time

Man and hogs and dogs have been linked together for thousands of years. It’s believed that the first dogs were domesticated as long ago as 30,000 years. There is evidence of a breed of canine that was not grey wolf and not exactly canis lupus familiars (your dog) either but was living with humans. What is most interesting to me about this is that the first evidence of rope being made or used is not for another 2,000 years so to say we “tamed” dogs doesn’t seem right, it’s not like we caught them …

Ice Beard Bull

I was lucky enough to get to hunt a private elk herd in Colorado last fall and as luck would have it a blizzard rolled in. Here's how it went down. First off this is a private herd managed by South Platte Outfitters owned by Jacob McIntosh. Jacob and Sky have done an amazing job with this place. The end goal is to return the area back to native grasses and animals including upland birds and buffalo along with the elk. They have built an amazing lodge they call "The Fort" from the ground …

Take What Africa Gives You

Take what Africa gives you is an old saying that I always thought to mean, just go hunt and see what you see. I guess different people can translate it different but to me it's like saying don't worry about how big or what animal and don't pass up animals looking for bigger animals, just take what Africa gives you. That's basically how I hunt anyway. I do think the saying needs to be revised a little to say, take what Africa gives you that your budget allows, because a man with any shooting …

Makuya Park South Africa Fishing and Camping

When planning our South Africa trip I wanted to catch a tiger fish but to get to really good tiger fishing that would require more travel so when I came across a post on an African Hunting page about tiger fish in Limpopo it peaked my interest. Bossie Mostert of Limpopo Big Game Safaris said he had a place on the Luvuvhu River that borders Kruger National Park with tiger fish in it and we could spend a few days there in addition to a hunt. Well this is a no brainer, the man has hunting just …

Let’s Talk About Predators

Most folks predator hunt after deer season and before spring turkey season. Cold winter is prime time for furs. Here in Texas there isn't much of a prime time, we do occasionally get a cold spell that last a few weeks but for the most part furs are never really good. I don't chase the pointy tooth critters for the fur anyway. I will sell some hides if they are decent but my goal is fun and population control. As the price of furs has gone down around here the less guys are trapping so the more …
